CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âAre you saying you want me to lie for you? Is that what youâre telling me?â Tammy stood in the middle of their room, wearing a look of indignation.
Savannah wore only a towel. âThatâs exactly what Iâm asking you to do.â
She pulled some clean clothes from her suitcase and spread them on the bed. âI have to go into town and see Dirk, and you have to cover for me here. Tell them I have a migraine, that Iâm sleeping it off.â
âBut you donât, and you arenât.â
âSo? What does that have to do with the price of Arkansas cotton?â
Tammy looked confused. âWhat does cotton have to do with this?â
Savannah sighed, feeling a depth of fatigue that had nothing to do with her morning hike through the daisies. âTammy Lou...âTammy hated it when she called her that, which was precisely why she did. âAre you telling me that you never, never, ever tell a lie. Not even a little white fib?â
Tammy lifted her chin a couple of notches. âI live my life in such a way that I donât do things that Iâm ashamed of, things that I would have to lie about to my fellow human beings.â
Savannah stared at her for a long time, wondering whether to pin a gold medal to her chest or barf on her pink tennis shoes.
âWell, thatâs most commendable,â she said. âAnd I agree with you, at least in principle. But this is business, and in the course of earning a living, we sometimes have to blacken our souls by uttering a falsehood. So, if you wonât do it because I ask you to as a friend, then as your boss, Iâm telling you to. Got it?â
âOh, okay.â She seemed enormously relieved. âNo problem.â
Savannah filed that one away for future consideration. Tammyâs sliding scale of moral values was a never-ending source of amazement and amusement for her.
Tammy headed for the doorway, then turned around abruptly and fixed her with a suspicious eye. âWait just a minute. This trip into town really is business, isnât it?â she said. âI mean... you wouldnât just be sneaking off to get a big, gorpy dessert, or something disgusting like that, are you?â
âTammy! Iâm shocked.â
âBull pucky. Youâre going to do it. Youâre going to break your diet and forfeit all the good the spa has done for you-Thatâs so sad, Savannah.â
âOh, Tammy, Tammy... Ta-m-m-my. Donât worry. I promise not to consume a single calorie while Iâm away from the Royal Palms Spa.â
âCross your heart?â
âAnd swear to swallow my bubble gum.â
Tammy appeared mollified. âGood. See you later this afternoon.â
After she had left the room and Savannah was getting dressed to go, she didnât feel the slightest twinge of guilt. The cheap burger place where Dirk would want to eat always microwaved their beef patties. And microwaving food removed every single smidgen of a calorie.
Hell, everybody knew that!
